Cuban dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez and NPR’S Latino USA award-winning host Maria Hinojosa are headlining a Hispanicize 2014 Hispanic Journalist Showcase that this year focuses on media entrepreneurship.

Sanchez, the Cuban journalist who’s won worldwide acclaim for using Twitter to fight the 54-year-old Castro dictatorship in Cuba, will join Hinojosa, the event’s co-chair, as one of this year’s four Latinovator Award recipients. The Latinovator Awards recognize Latinos who have done something notable or remarkable.

Media Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Hispanic Journalists

Recognizing that journalists are facing industry-wide layoffs and furloughs, Hispanicize 2014 this year is launching a first ever Media Entrepreneurship for Hispanic Journalists Boot Camp. The free, full day boot camp for journalists, slated for Thursday, April 3rd, will be based on key chapters from Ruiz’s forthcoming book, “The Journalist’s Guide to Media Entrepreneurship.” The how-to book is based on Ruiz’s extensive experience as a former journalist and current media entrepreneur who in 2007 sold one of his media ventures for $5.5 million.

This year’s Hispanic Journalists Showcase will also feature a special session to release the results of a national study about Hispanic journalists’ beliefs about their careers, tech and social media conducted by California State University Fullerton, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), Hispanicize Wire and Florida International University. A separate session will also examine The State of Hispanic Print.

Google and YouTube will also play leading roles in facilitating several sessions devoted to helping Hispanic journalists and bloggers master Google Tools, SEO and YouTube. Additional social media training sessions will help journalists with topics like social media video reporting and how to extend the social media reach of your stories.

Hispanic Journalist Overview

The Hispanic Journalist Showcase of Hispanicize 2014 consists of a multi-faceted platform tailored to meet the needs of Latino journalists. The showcase also includes:

Hispanic Student Journalist Project: Conducted in partnership with Cal State Fullerton and Florida International University, this project consists of empowering college and high school journalism students from across the country to produce stories and interviews directly from Hispanicize 2014 for the Hispanicize.com and TekBoom.com platforms. Most of the students will not only cover the event for the microsite but will also be paired with media outlets to be editorial, video and/or photo stringers for them at the event.

VIP Journalist Credentials and Special Rates: Hispanic journalists will full VIP access to all facets of Hispanicize 2014. Credentialed, working media will be given complimentary tickets. Full time journalists who wish to attend for strictly professional development reasons and not to cover the event will get a special journalist rate of $225. Media business executives do not qualify for the special journalist rates.
